Chapter XV: Crops on Cold-Beds Under Frames

Excerpt: By the use of cold-beds under frames a number of crops can be brought to maturity in advance of those grown in the open. This plan is especially helpful when fresh stable manure cannot be got in sufficient quantities to make up hot-beds for all the frames, or when many of the frames and lights are not in good condition for early forcing.

Chapter VI: Frames and Lights

Excerpt: It will be seen that this frame is very shallow, and very little higher at the back than the front. This design is the outcome of generations of experience. All obstructions to light are eliminated as far as possible; the plants are grown near the glass, and consequently they become as sturdy as when grown in the open.
