Excerpt: It will be seen that this frame is very shallow, and very little higher at the back than the front. This design is the outcome of generations of experience. All obstructions to light are eliminated as far as possible; the plants are grown near the glass, and consequently they become as sturdy as when grown in the open.
EXCERPT: MANURE is the most important factor in French gardening. The most suitable material is that from stables where the horses are bedded with straw. This, known as "long manure," should be brought into the garden in very fresh condition. There should be no peat, sawdust, shavings, or rubbish mixed with it.
La première édition de mon traité de culture maraîchère a paru en 1871. Quoique tirée à un très grand nombre d'exemplaires, cette édition a été épuisée entièrement en moins de deux ans.
