Rye Cover Crop

From Rye Cover Crop

Well, it's that time of year at Tumbledown Farm when we put the garden away and prepare for the cold winds and snow to blow. As winter approaches, we try to preserve the fertility of the soil, prevent over-winter leaching of nutrients from the soil, and prepare to improve the soil structure (by plowing the luxuriant top growth under as organic matter in the spring) by planting a cover crop. Our favorite, for many reasons, is annual rye. It is readily available from our local feed & seed. And we think it is just plain beautiful as a winter blanket before and after the snow.
