I received a note from a reader today introducing me to Hometown Seeds, an online seed salesman providing home gardeners with small quantity packets of vegetable, flower, and herb seeds. The thing that caught my attention was a section of the site called Survival Seeds, an idea so obvious and simple that I wish I had thought of it first! You can find most, probably all, of these seeds elsewhere, even from the well-known big boys like Burpee. (For all I know, the Hometown Seeds web site might even be a front for some mega seed corp. I couldn't tell from the information on the site itself. Hopefully, they'll add some specific info on their "about us" page soon, especially about the source of their seed.) But Hometown Seeds is making it easy for us home gardeners with a simple selection of 16 common, easy to grow varieties of vegetables. Grow them this year and save the seed! You'll have a perpetual seed and food source free of worry.
Many people are becoming more and more concerned about the long-term availability of open-pollinated seed and local control over food production. Hometown Seeds is also making it easy for those of us who are asked by gardening novices, "How do I get started?" The quick answer now has to be, "Go to Hometown Seeds and get the Survival Seeds packet!" At $39.99 for 16 seed packets, that's about $2.50 a packet. But you'll still need to know how to grow, harvest, and save the seed. For that you can come back to Tumbledown Farm!
Anyone out there who has used their seeds? Share your experiences with our readers.
