We're Awaiting the Arrival of Coturnix Quail Chicks!

Hova-Bator Incubator

What a fun way to anticipate spring and Easter this year at our house. We are looking forward to adding quail to the diversity of our micro farm! We are starting small, with just 24 eggs. As you can tell from the photo, we went the "cheap" route. We'll keep you posted as plans emerge for our mini "pastured poultry" operation in the grassy lanes between the rows of our garden. We are designing our own "pens" to fit our 22" grass lanes. We'll also begin to pasture the rabbits this year using a similar setup, but with wooden slats on the bottom of the pen to keep them from escaping.

Ready to try your own hand at meat and eggs? Mother Earth News has a great addition to their site, a custom Google search engine they call the "Hatchery Finder" for searching all the major poultry houses for poultry and game birds. Just enter "coturnix quail" and look at what a fine job it does! We'll undoubtedly add this sort of search option to some of the Tumbledown pages soon. It is too good a tool to ignore.
