Raised Garden Beds for 2012

Ever since I began reading Thomas Smith's book, French Gardening (1909, http://www.tumbledownfarm.com/drupal/French_Gardening/Contents), I have become interested in "intensive gardening" in frames (hot frames, cold frames, raised beds, etc.), so I'm beginning a total "redo" of my garden for 2012 using simple, inexpensive, temporary frames. Filling them now with year-old horse manure, will top off in spring with compost and see what happens!

I am using both 1X6 and 1X8 boards (8ft. sides and 4 ft. ends) for the first year and will see what combination seems to work best. The cost is as follows:

1"X6" boards

8' = $4.69 (X4 = $18.76)

4' = $2.30 (X3 = $6.90)

1"X2"X24" wood stakes = $6.49

Total for a bed 4 ft X 16 ft = $32.15

Since the manure / topsoil / and compost are "free," we'll see what the return is as the season passes. I suspect we'll have larger and more vegetables than ever before! And that's a good thing!
